Free food, fireworks and loud salsa music can only mean one thing in Sweetwater, Fourth of July. The yearly celebration of our Nation’s independence brings together residents of Sweetwater and surrounding areas to gather at Ronselli Park and enjoy festivities. Those in attendance in the annual Independence Day celebration, a yearly event made possible by the City of Sweetwater, enjoyed free food and got a chance to view one of the few public fireworks displays in this part of West Miami-Dade County.
Kids played laser tag at no cost in an outdoor activity provided by Phit For Kids, a nonprofit based in Miami helping kids become more active through fun physical activities.
Sweetwater Mayor Jose Diaz was present and was seen serving refreshments to residents. Also in attendance was Jose “Pepe” Diaz, former Mayor of Sweetwater and current Miami-Dade County Commissioner up for reelection next year (this is his 12th year serving as county commissioner).
During the fireworks display, residents sitting closest to the fireworks were given a scare when one of the shells exploded near a crowd of spectators. Miami Dade Fire and Rescue treated one girl for minor burns on her arm.
