Sweetwater IKEA Has Largest Solar Installation In South Florida

Sweetwater, FL – What makes enough electricity to power about 169 homes a year, save the emissions of about 256 cars, while not polluting the environment? The Answer: A 178,000 square foot solar array fixed atop the newest shopping hotspot in Miami-Dade County, IKEA. Miami-Dade IKEA will open this summer in Sweetwater, FL and will feature the largest solar array in South Florida. IKEA is the largest non-utility solar owner in Florida.

The solar array has a 1,178-kW system, built with 4,620 panels, and will produce about 1,738,876 kWh of electricity annually for the store, equal to reducing 1,227 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). “Completing this solar array is an exciting milestone as we prepare to open IKEA Miami this summer,” said Selwyn Crittendon, IKEA Miami store manager. “IKEA strives to create a sustainable life for communities where we operate, so we are proud this new store will generate solar power while offering our unique selection of affordable home furnishings.”
