What are city commission meetings?
The City of Sweetwater commission meetings are public meetings held periodically by the City of Sweetwater government to discuss the following:
- Legislative Issues
- Lawsuits involving the City of Sweetwater
- Reports of city departments, government employees and elected officials
- Special Presentations
- Public Petitions / Remonstrances
- Public matters in the City of Sweetwater, FL
When and where do the meetings take place?
Regular commission meetings take place on the first Monday of every month at 8:00 P.M., except federal holidays. Special commission meetings take place throughout the month as scheduled by the 7 Commissioners or Mayor.
The commission meetings take place on the third floor of Sweetwater City Hall, located at 500 S.W. 109 Ave Miami, FL 33174. Parking is free.
Who can attend the meetings?
The meetings are public and may be attended by anyone.
Petitions and Remonstrances
The city charter allows for residents, taxpayers and interested parties to stand before the city commission and speak regarding matters which the city government as control over.
According to the city charter, you can communicate to the city commission in writing, orally or the reading of a petition:
Any person desiring to address the city commission shall first secure the permission of the presiding officer; however, under the following circumstances, unless the presiding officer rules otherwise, any qualified person may address the city commission without securing prior permission: (1)Written communications: Subject to the requirements of section 2-46, any interested parties or their authorized representatives may address the city commission by written communications. (2) Oral communications: Subject to the requirements of section 2-46, any taxpayers or residents of the city or their authorized representatives may address the city commission by oral communication on any matter over which the city commission has control. (3) Reading of protests, petitions: Subject to the requirements of section 2-46, any interested persons or their authorized representatives may address the city commission by reading of protests, petitions or communications relating to zoning, sewer and street proceedings, hearings on protests, appeals and petitions, or similar matters, in regard to matters then under consideration.
Persons in the past have used the opportunity to speak before the commission for the following:
- Asking questions regarding government services
- Placing complaints for the Commissioners or Mayor to consider
- Bringing up issues dealing with city property (defective park lighting, public parking issues with 109 Tower residents and visitors, etc)
- Special requests
It is recommended you contact the city clerk a few business days before the commission meeting to arrange your communication to the commission.
